Topic 3 - General Notes
While this unit has applications in other places, it is also the easiest one to move around when planning the course. I have taught this in the first and second year of the DP program.

Veritasium - Feeling temperature (not really heavy content, but interesting and related)
Thermal Concepts Playlist (See Videos 1-3)
Practical Ideas:
- Having students feel a metal and wooden object that are at room temperature to determine which feels cooler and why it feels cooler
- Determining the type of a metal using a calorimeter - Putting dry ice into a balloon then tying it off and allowing the transition to gas fill the balloon - Putting dry ice and a bit of water into a 2L bottle, closing the cap and allowing the expansion to explode the bottle (NOTE: THIS IS DANGEROUS AND APPROPRIATE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN. THE EXPLOSION HAD ENOUGH POWER TO BLOW OUT THE DRAIN OF THE SINK I WAS USING) If you lightly close the cap, it will blow the cap off. If you tightly close it, the bottle will blow. |

Veritasium - Fire Syringe (adiabatic process)
Modeling a Gas Playlist (See Videos 4-6)
Practical Ideas:
- Using kinetic theory device to demonstrate effects of changing temperature
- Heating a gas bulb to show effects on pressure of the gas in the bulb - Use a Vernier pressure sensor and air syringe to demonstrate the effects of decreasing volume on pressure |
