Topic 2 General Notes
This unit is a great opportunity to get the students doing lots of small activities and teaching them to work with error and uncertainty. It also forms the basis for their problem solving skills, applying free body diagrams and good technique in breaking down word problems. This unit is vital to the rest of the course.

BBC video on acceleration due to gravity
Practical ideas:
- Finding acceleration due to gravity using video of something falling beside a measuring tape
- Finding acceleration due to gravity by droping an object toward a motion sensor |

Practical ideas:
- Using an air track and pulley-weight system to determine the effects of change mass on acceleration.
- Have students go up and down in an elevator on a scale to explain net force - Students use friction boards and masses to determine coefficient of static friction and to predict force needed to overcome static friction. |

Practical Ideas:
- Students stretch a spring and find the spring constant, then predict force needed to extend the spring to a new length
- Students climb a ladder or stairs and determine work and power |

Practical Ideas:
- Using an air track and 2 cars with different masses to demonstrate collisions and momentum exchanges
- Using a tennis ball and racket to demonstrate how time that a force is applied affects impulse |
